What could be better than Angus?
With the continual dominance of the nation's cowherd being heavily Angus influenced, the improvement in average quality grade and subsequent customer eating satisfaction has been exponential. Fortunately Angus brought so many other attributes to the table as well including improved motherability and udder quality, calving ease, the ability to genetically dehorn cattle, consistent type and color and so many other convenience traits.
But are your straight Angus cows getting the job done today that they were 20 or 30 years ago? We imagine in many instances, if not most, probably not. Mature size has been on a direct parallel with weaning and yearling performance, foot structure in particular has suffered greatly, fertility certainly has been more challenging than it used to be, and now the issues of CHF have become far more prevalent as well.
We all feel this sting at some point or another…part of being in the cow business. But, there is a path to significant improvement in all areas including the most important opportunity for continued sustainability - your profit! Thoughtful and intentional crossbreeding helps make everything better, especially in those less heritable traits that are harder to impact with the long generational cycle experienced in the cow calf business.
